Sri Chinmoy

Sri Chinmoy is a modern spiritual teacher who dedicated his life to the service of humanity.

Sri Chinmoy established meditation centres in over 60 countries around the world. Members of the Sri Chinmoy Centre continue to give free meditation classes in cities around the world.

Born in India in 1931, Sri Chinmoy spent 20 years in a spiritual community in the South of India before coming to the West in 1964. Sri Chinmoy lived in Queens, New York until his passing in 2007, however, he frequently travelled around the world offering lectures, concerts and meetings with people dedicated to promoting a more harmonious world.

At the heart of Sri Chinmoy’s philosophy is the importance attached to the ancient practise of meditation. Through meditation, a seeker is able to gain contact with his inner self and learn the art.

As well as meditation, Sri Chinmoy taught that the inner and outer life must go together. Sri Chinmoy himself was a remarkable model of abundance in the outer life. He was a prolific artist, poet, writer, musician and sportsman. Sri Chinmoy encouraged sports such as running. Sri Chinmoy also founded the Peace Run, a global relay run dedicated to promoting better understanding and friendship between people from around the world.

Sri Chinmoy visited London on many occasions and gave a total of six concerts at the Royal Albert Hall.

Sri Chinmoy’s Meetings and Activities

Sri Chinmoy has met with hundreds of heads of state and national and local leaders for dialogue for peace and progress. He has held meditations and addressed numerous parliaments and congresses, including those in the United States, Canada, Australia, Norway and the United Kingdom.

Sri Chinmoy has been invited by many leaders and luminaries to offer his philosophy for achieving world peace and has been privileged to share inspiration with some of the greatest figures of our time, many of whom have participated in his activities such as the Peace Run, The Oneness-Heart-Tears and Smiles, the Sri Chinmoy Peace-Blossoms Programme and the Lifting Up the World with a Oneness-Heart Award.

“We meditate for various reasons. Peace of mind we all badly need. Therefore, when we meditate, either consciously or unconsciously we aim at peace of mind. Meditation give us peace of mind without a tranquilliser. And unlike a tranquilliser, the peace of mind that we get from meditation does not fade away. It lasts for good in some corner of the inmost recesses of our aspiring heart.” Sri Chinmoy
